Learn 5 Benefits to Using a Lick Mat

  1. Promotes Mental Stimulation

Lick mats not only provide physical stimulation for your dog but also offer a significant amount of mental stimulation. By engaging their senses and challenging their problem-solving skills, lick mats can promote mental exercise and keep your furry friend's mind sharp and active.

    2. Relieves Anxiety and Stress

Furthermore, the act of licking itself can have a calming effect on dogs, releasing endorphins that help reduce stress and anxiety. When your dog licks a lick mat, they enter a state of focused concentration, which can help distract them from any anxious thoughts or behaviors. This mental focus, combined with the calming sensation of licking, provides a soothing and stress-relieving experience for your furry friend.

    3. Soothes Teething Discomfort

By providing a textured surface for dogs and puppies to gently chew on, lick mats can help massage their gums and provide a cooling sensation. Adding frozen treats or spreading a soft, puppy-safe paste on the mat can further enhance the soothing effect. This not only provides relief for your teething puppy but also helps discourage them from chewing on inappropriate items, such as furniture or shoes.

    4. Improves Dental Health

Improving your dog's dental health is crucial for their overall well-being and can help prevent oral health issues down the line. A study published in the Journal of Veterinary Dentistry found that regular teeth cleaning significantly reduced the risk of periodontal disease in dogs. Incorporating lick mats into your dog's routine can be a helpful addition to your dental care efforts. While it's not a substitute for regular brushing, the gentle scraping action of the textured surface can contribute to maintaining cleaner teeth and healthier gums.

    5. Encourages Slower Eating Habits

Many dogs have a tendency to gobble up their food quickly, which can lead to a variety of problems, including indigestion, bloating, and even potential choking hazards. When your dog eats too quickly, they are more likely to swallow large chunks of food without properly chewing, which can put extra strain on their teeth and gums.

Now that you know the many benefits of adding lick mats to your dog’s routine you may find yourself wondering what to put on a lick mat? We’ve created 5 homemade lick mat dog treats recipes.
